Trail Overview
The Rivière Alex Overlook Trail is a scenic, moderately challenging 4x4 route in the ZEC des Passes that rewards offroaders with breathtaking panoramic views of the Rivière Alex reservoir and its dramatic surrounding valley. Spanning approximately 4.6 miles along an elevated mountainside forestry road, this trail is ideal for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles seeking an adventurous escape into the remote backcountry of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. The route climbs steadily above the river basin, traversing a mix of dirt and gravel surfaces that can quickly become slick or eroded following heavy rains. Drivers will encounter loose gravel, washboard sections, and minor ruts, making steady momentum and a capable vehicle essential for navigating the elevation changes and exposed mountainside terrain.
Beyond the stunning main reservoir vistas, a southern branch of the trail extends deeper into the rugged upland terrain, opening up opportunities to explore pristine areas near Lac du Vertige, Lac Wellie, and several unnamed wilderness ponds. Because this is an active resource-access network managed under Québec's ZEC system, visitors must be prepared to share the road with forestry traffic and navigate sections with minimal routine maintenance. Self-reliance is critical here, as cellular service is virtually nonexistent, recovery assistance is far away, and seasonal hazards like spring washouts or dense mountain fog can quickly complicate the journey. For those fully prepared with a well-equipped vehicle and safety gear, this trail serves as a perfect, remote gateway to the spectacular Saguenay wilderness.
Access Description
Accessing this route requires registration and payment of vehicle and recreation fees associated with the ZEC des Passes. Active forestry operations share these roads, meaning heavy industrial traffic has the right of way. The road is not maintained in the winter, and spring thaw conditions can lead to severe mud, washouts, and soft shoulders.
