Trail Overview
Microwave Tower Trail is an exceptional day-trip destination for four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs seeking stunning panoramic views of the Okanagan Valley, Kalamalka Lake, and the city of Vernon. This 7.3-mile route offers a moderate off-road challenge with a technical rating of 4, climbing nearly 2,900 feet from the valley floor to its peak at 4,484 feet. Starting near Vernon off Highway 6 via King Edward Forest Service Road (FSR), the trail begins with relatively straightforward navigation before transitioning into more rugged terrain. Once off the main FSR, drivers will encounter loose rock, narrow sections, and minor washouts that require careful tire placement and adequate ground clearance.
As the route climbs higher, drivers are treated to spectacular vantage points overlooking the vibrant blue waters of Kalamalka Lake and the surrounding agricultural valley. The trail continues past King Edward Lake, a popular designated campsite that serves as an excellent spot for a midday lunch or a multi-day basecamp. Because of its high elevation, the trail is subject to seasonal closures, with a gate restricting access during wetter months, and heavy winter snowdrifts that plow in the access road until late spring. Offroaders should plan their trips for the summer and autumn months, bringing a camera to capture the sweeping views from the microwave tower summit.
