Guichon Creek to Tunkwa Lake

This scenic 15.2-mile dirt and gravel route connects Savona to the highlands near Tunkwa Lake, making it an excellent choice for overland beginners and scenery seekers looking for an accessible mountain drive. Starting across from the gas station in Savona at an elevation of 1,180 feet, the trail winds southward, climbing steadily through the semi-arid landscape of the Thompson-Nicola region. It skirts the western slopes of Mount Savona, which rises to 4,993 feet, eventually reaching a maximum elevation of approximately 4,000 feet near the Tunkwa Lake area. Along the way, travelers are treated to spectacular panoramic views of Kamloops Lake and the rolling grasslands, with frequent opportunities to spot local wildlife like mule deer and bighorn sheep. With a technical rating of 2, the trail consists primarily of well-maintained gravel and dirt surfaces that are easily navigated by high-clearance four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicles under normal conditions. This route seamlessly continues from the Greenstone Mountain Route, offering an excellent gateway to explore the vast network of forestry roads in the surrounding provincial parks and recreation areas. Because of the elevation span of nearly 2,800 feet, weather conditions can vary, meaning the lower sections near Savona dry out early in the spring while the upper forest sections may hold snow and mud until late May. No permits are required, but drivers should remain mindful of livestock and stay on designated tracks while skirting the Tunkwa Lake Reserve.
