Trail Overview

Embark on an unforgettable off-road journey up Farnham Mountain, where nature's beauty and rugged terrain collide. This trail is ideal for experienced drivers seeking a challenge. Along the way, you'll tackle rocky sections, loose gravel, and steep inclines, with obstacles up to 2-3 feet high. The trail also includes tight turns, occasional water crossings, and the remnants of a dilapidated bridge that adds a touch of history and adventure to your drive. Several waterfalls can be spotted cascading down the mountainsides, providing refreshing pit stops and photo opportunities. The drive offers insane views of surrounding glaciers, with the Farnham Glacier being a highlight. For those traveling in a convoy, prepare for dust clouds, especially during dry spells. The trail starts in a forested area with a gentle climb. Eventually, you arrive at a bridge that has seen better days. You may have to move planks of wood around in order to cover the many holes then pick your line wisely. The real climb happens after the bridge requires 4Lo. It was on the initial stretch after the bridge where a boulder had fallen blocking the road requiring a winch to move it over enough to pass by. The trees become few and far between as you enter into the alpine. Prior to mid-July, you may find patches of snow on the road and may be limited on how high you can make it. When you are close to the top, there is a water crossing with a very strong current. High clearance is needed to be able to dip into it, and then climb out. A small cabin with bed frames, a large dining table, a wood stove, and a few necessities for cooking sits almost at the glacier. Don't forget to bring your shovels as there may be snow to shovel to get through on the road after this point earlier in the summer. The steep climb continues until you reach the end of the road and the glacier begins. Take the time to get out and check out the glacier snow, flowing water, and rugged mountains. Whether it's the breathtaking scenery, the technical challenges, or the unique features like the dilapidated bridge and the glacier views, the Farnham Mountain 4x4 trail offers an adventure that's both demanding and deeply rewarding. Don't forget to bring your camera, a shovel, a winch, a chainsaw, a satellite device, a sense of adventure, and a readiness for anything nature throws your way!

Difficulty

You will find deep water crossings with strong currents, large rocks to navigate around and over, off-camber sections, a bridge that you must pick your line on as it is dilapidated, occasional boulders that need to be winched out of the way to pass through the trail.

History

The access road leading to the glacier was originally constructed by the Canadian Olympic development agency for summer training by the national ski team. Today, it serves as a route for adventurous visitors who make a long journey by vehicle or sled to reach this remote and scenic destination.

Avalanche still there, looks like a couple of avalanches short behind each other. Still beautiful area to visit. We saw a bear with three cubs crossing the road.

Definitely not a 6 rated trail. Much closer to a 4, and that’s only the last couple of miles, so don’t let the rating scare you from going as it’s not overly technical and does not require lockers or big tires. What it does offer is a fun trail, the opportunity to drive almost right to a glacier, and absolutely breathtaking views. This is a very fun trail and definitely recommended. .

We had a great time. For less experienced drivers, it was nice to have a spotter for the washouts as they are still a little off camber with consequential drop offs. Our double cab, long bed Tacomas struggled a bit getting back over the main wash out because of the articulation. Rear lockers (or maybe driver mod) would make it much easier.

It is approximately a 2 Hour Dr. on the forest service Road with the last half hour requiring any skill. The washouts or rock slides are easy in four-wheel-drive with a couple offering peace of mind but not essential four low options. The water crossings were very easily navigated, and the water flow was not intimidating as it is late summer. There are two different forks when you get up to the cabin both are worth driving and the fork to the left is an easy walk up to the glacier.

Very nice trail to explore breathtaking views of Glacier. Was a little hesitant first as some of the turns are certainly technical and you would need a spotter for safe passage. Will give it 7/10 for difficulty.

Rain causes deterioration of three rock slide areas on the trail that may require digging with a pick to reduce off camber areas (measured at 18 degrees on this trip). Sketchy bridge has been removed for a much better through the creek water crossing.

River crossing is fine in an any 4x4 truck with a 2” Level. But the wash out is tricky and more nerve racking than anything recommend to go with someone and use a spotter on this section, or bring a shovel to level the top a bit.

The trail is a decently maintained gravel road, 4x4 not required until the water crossing around KM 55 ish. I'd recommend 4x4 or some experience to take a 2wd through however about 2km up from there there is a rock slide in a tricky spot that will require some careful line selection and a competent driver. About 1km past that the trail is impassable due to snow. Getting to the cabin will require a steep hike and probably some snow shoes. Still worth the drive for some amazing views.

Top end of the trail is still blocked by snow. It's possible to reach the boulder in the middle of the trail, but there is still snow partially covering the trail leading up to it and snow completely blocking the trail just past.

Large amount of snow made the trail impassable after the river crossing.

tall snow drifts blocking the last part of the trail after the water crossing. also looked like through my binos that part of the trail collapsed but could not confirm because I did not make it past the drifts to that spot
