History
Situated nearby is the remarkable Memorial Lava Bed Park, a site of great geological and cultural importance. The park was formed approximately 250–270 years ago by an eruption of the Tseax Volcano, one of Canada’s youngest volcanoes. The eruption produced a striking landscape of basaltic lava that extends roughly 12 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres in width along the Nass River, surrounded by lush old-growth forest. The area holds deep cultural significance for the Nisg̱a’a Nation, as the eruption claimed the lives of an estimated 2,000 Nisg̱a’a people. Today, the park is both a memorial and a place of learning, where visitors can explore the Nisg̱a’a people’s history, stories, and enduring connection to the land through exhibits at the visitor centre.
