Trail Overview
Cornwall Fire Lookout is an exceptional, scenic drive ideal for families, overlanders, and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts looking for a highly rewarding climb with minimal technical difficulty. Spanning roughly 13.6 miles, this trail ascends from the arid valley floor near the Trans-Canada Highway at 1,560 feet to the subalpine heights of Cornwall Hills Provincial Park at over 6,600 feet. The route carries a technical rating of 3, transitioning from a gravel access road to dirt tracks that wind through beautiful, sweeping grass meadows and dense evergreen forests. Most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs can navigate the route during dry conditions without major difficulty, making it an excellent day trip or a scenic detour on a longer overlanding itinerary.
Because of the high elevation of the summit, deep winter snow drifts often block access until early June, so timing is key for planning a trip. When the route does clear, summer visitors are treated to spectacular displays of blooming wildflowers in July and August, alongside 360-degree panoramic views of British Columbia's Coast Mountains from the active lookout site. Travelers should prepare for potential obstacles such as fallen trees blocking the path and extremely slick, muddy conditions along the dirt sections during or after rainfall. Carrying a chainsaw or bow saw is highly recommended to clear deadfall, and visitors should remember that the active fire lookout is meticulously maintained by the Four Wheel Drive Association of BC, requiring everyone to treat the structure and surrounding environment with respect.
Difficulty
This trail is mostly an easy trail, depending on the season. Normally not accessible until the first week of June due to snow drifts left over from winter. This trail can be very muddy and slick in the rain in certain parts of the trail. Deadfall trees are common to run into on this trail be prepared to clear logs off the trail.
History
Situated at an elevation of 6,600 feet in Cornwall Hills Provincial Park, the historic lookout is surrounded by subalpine meadows famous for their spectacular wildflower blooms in July and August. The lookout itself is actively maintained and preserved by the Four Wheel Drive Association of British Columbia.
