Description
Avalanche Peak is a famous mountain located in Arthur's Pass National Park. There are multiple ways to reach the summit of Avalanche Peak, but approaching via Scott's Track is the most common. This trail will take you from the valley floor, through a forest, and to the peak. This out and back hike is 4.6 miles long and gains 3,573 feet of elevation. This hike starts from the Devil's Punchbowl Car Park. Begin hiking north on Arthur's Pass Walking Track. After about 500 feet, take a left onto Scott's Track. Cross West Coast Road and continue on the trail. You will now be hiking in the woods. The trail is very steep and rocky. Careful footing is required. You will enjoy periodic views of Devil's Punchbowl Falls and various mountains. After hiking up the steep and rocky trail for 1.5 miles, you will emerge above the treeline. You will have a great view of Mount Cassidy and Devil's Punchbowl Falls. The trail is still very steep and you may encounter loose rocks. There is also a lot of exposure. Be sure to proceed with caution. As you navigate the trail, you will enjoy views of the surrounding mountain peaks. After 0.7 miles, you will come to a junction. Stay right here. 0.1 more miles of hiking will bring you to the top of Avalanche Peak. From the peak, you will have beautiful views of Mount Rolleston, Mount Bealey, and various other peaks in the Southern Alps. After you have taken ample time to enjoy the panoramic views, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.Arthur's Pass National Park is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. Avalanche Peak can also be reached via the Avalanche Peak Track.
