Description
Owyhee River Road Loop is a 20.8 mile hiking and backpacking route located in Eastern Oregon. It starts from Owyhee River Road, just outside the small town of Rome, and loops through the high desert landscape, including a stretch along the canyon rim above the Owyhee River. This route provides a unique and challenging hiking experience in the Owyhee Canyonlands, with striking views of the river, towering rock formations, and vast desert expanses. It's ideal for experienced hikers and backpackers seeking solitude and adventure. The loop starts from Owyhee River Road and heads south to the edge of the canyon rim. This portion of the trail offers panoramic views of the river canyon, with its rugged cliffs and expansive desert scenery. From there the route makes a brief out-and-back following the dirt road along the rim for more scenic canyon views (this section can be eliminated for an overall shorter distance). In addition to views of the Owyhee River you'll encounter a mix of terrain, from rocky outcrops to sandy patches, with occasional descents and ascents. The path winds through the high desert, with sagebrush and juniper dotting the landscape.Continue northwest, following the dirt road as it parallels the Owyhee River until eventually turning east to reconnect to the dirt road path that you started on and retrace your steps back to the beginning. FLORA AND FAUNAThe high desert ecosystem offers a diverse array of plant life, including sagebrush, juniper, and occasional wildflowers. Wildlife may include pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and a variety of birds, including hawks and eagles.SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONSWater sources are scarce along this route, so it's crucial to carry enough water and a reliable purification method. The terrain can be challenging, with steep sections and loose footing, so proper footwear and hiking poles are recommended. Due to the remote nature of the loop it is a good practice to inform someone of your hiking plan before setting out.CAMPING AND PERMITSDispersed camping is allowed in designated areas, but always check the latest regulations and practice Leave No Trace principles.
