Description
The Juniper Gulch Trail starts Leslie Gulch on an easy tread that gets progressively harder as it goes. Each subsequent section rewards hikers with increasingly impressive views of the area's rich geology, which echoes the red-rock formations and pillars that you'd only expect to find in Utah. From the trailhead, head north into the gulch along a sandy wash that winds beneath caves and towering overhangs. At .06 miles, keep right at the split to follow a small ridge up to a rocky amphitheater. From the amphitheater, there's a nice view of Mahogany Mountain to the south. The surrounding rocks and distant view make a good turnaround spot for hikers limited by time or looking to keep things easier. The trail isn't over yet, though, as there are a few more great views to be had. To reach the next vantage point, continue left up the narrowing gulch to eventually complete a steep, challenging push to the saddle on the ridgeline above. From the top, enjoy a vast expanse that includes views of Lake Owyhee and the rippling ridges of the Owyhee Canyonlands. Most hikers will choose to turn around here but the trail does go on! For those that do press on the resulting views are well worth the extra push. From the saddle, the trail heads mostly south climbing the ridge right and left of various rock formations. On the way up the ridge, you'll see a structure off to the right. Have a look to satisfy tour curiosity but please respect what is left of it. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with 360 degree views from Yellow Jacket Point. You'll be able to see your car below but better than that you can see the vast reaches of the Owyhee Resivore both to the South and to the North.
