There and Back
This rugged route begins at the Shaft 6 parking area on State Route 42 and climbs steeply into the Hunter-West Kill Wilderness. Follow the unmarked path past an initial stream crossing, heading east toward the ridgeline. From here, navigation becomes critical — there is no maintained trail. Continue through thick forest to reach the summit of Mount Sherrill, marked by a small clearing and occasional views through the trees.
Stay on the ridge heading east toward North Dome, crossing a narrow col before beginning another steep, trail-less ascent. The summit of North Dome features a summit canister and limited views. After tagging both peaks, return the same way, retracing your route through the forested ridgeline.
This is a strenuous Catskill hike requiring off-trail travel, solid navigation skills, and route-finding experience. Expect steep grades, blowdown, and limited visibility in dense forest. While the terrain is challenging, the reward is two seldom-visited summits, quiet wilderness, and the satisfaction of navigating classic Catskill bushwhacks.
