Begin this route at the East Gate parking area off Route 9 in Ware, MA, and follow the black-blazed East Gate Trail as it heads east into Quabbin Park. The trail begins as a forested footpath, passing near the edges of Pepper’s Mill Pond. Terrain here is uneven and may be muddy in wet conditions. Continue along the footpath until you reach the base of Goodnough Dike. From there, turn right and climb up to the paved roadway that runs along the top of the Dike. The route follows this paved section west with sweeping views across Quabbin Reservoir, one of the best vista stretches in the area.
After crossing the Dike, the road descends through a wooded section. Hikers have the option to add the smaller Goodnough Dike Vista Trail, which branches off to the left just before rejoining the road near the base of the Dike. At the main junction, make a left to complete the return leg via the East Gate Trail. The combination of footpath and paved road makes this a varied and scenic hike through classic Central Massachusetts woodland, with a rewarding overlook across the reservoir’s southern arm.
