Jurupa Mountain - South Trail

The South Trail is one of two primary trails to reach the summit of Jurupa Mountain - the other being the much busier North Trail.As opposed to the well worn North Trail, the South Trail to the summit follows a former emergency service road that has since become unmaintained and somewhat overgrown. The route is clear, and trail use keeps a single track through the brush up to the top. Route access begins through a gate at the north end of Almandine Way. The path wraps around a couple homes before crossing a deep wash and beginning the climb up the side of the mountain. Switchbacks visible from the bottom mark the slow route, and the trail is a solid uphill trudge over its entire course. The grade remains fairly steady, with a couple short steep sections. As you gain in elevation, views south over the city of Fontana open up, and the neighboring hills reveal themselves across the landscape.There is little shade - dependent upon the time of day - along the hike. Brambles from the overgrown brush tends to cramp the trail at certain points, so consider wearing pants and long sleeves on this hike, regardless of the weather to protect against that.Upon reaching the summit, a round flat area offers views in every direction from the top, and is worth taking a bit of time to take in. From here, you can retrace your route back to the bottom.Streetside residential parking is available along Almandine Way, otherwise there are spaces available in nearby Cantera Park, where water and a bathroom are located.
