The Earnslaw Burn Track is a challenging hike located near Glenorchy, Otago. This trail travels to the face of a large mountain and features a glacier. This out and back hike is 15.2 miles long and gains 2,782 feet of elevation. This hike starts from a small parking area off of Lovers Leap Rd. Take some stairs over a fence and begin hiking northwest. You will be hiking through active pasture for the first parts of this trail. The trail almost immediately goes uphill. After about 0.1 miles, you will be hiking in a lush, green forest. The trail can be very muddy and may require maneuvering past fallen trees. Careful footing is essential. You will remain in the forest for about 5 miles before entering a beautiful valley next to Earnslaw Burn. This will be your first view of Mount Earnslaw. The trail can be difficult to follow here, so be sure to bring a map. After another 0.5 miles, you will have your first good view of the face of Mount Earnslaw and its hanging glacier. Continue hiking parallel to Earnslaw Burn as you are surrounded by massive rock walls. You may see waterfalls to your left and right, depending on the conditions. Another 1.1 miles will bring you to your best viewpoint of Earnslaw Glacier and to the end of the trail. You are likely to see many waterfalls at this point. From here, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the parking area. The Earnslaw Burn Track is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. This hike is often done as a backpacking trip. The Earnslaw Burn Track is a terrific option for experienced hikers visiting the Glenorchy area.
