Lake Dispute Track

The Lake Dispute Track is a moderately challenging hike near Queenstown, Otago. This trail leads to a viewpoint of Lake Dispute. This out and back hike is 3.8 miles long and gains 958 feet of elevation. This hike begins from Glenorchy Queenstown Rd. Park along the side of the road. Begin hiking north on Lake Dispute Walkway. You will immediately be hiking uphill. As you hike up multiple switchbacks, you will periodically have views of Lake Wakatipu and the mountains in the distance. After you have hiked uphill for 0.8 miles and gained around 500 feet of elevation, the trail begins to flatten out. Another 0.1 miles will bring you to a junction. Go straight here to stay on Lake Dispute Walkway. You will now be on the south end of Lake Dispute, but you will not have a great view of it. Another 0.3 miles of hiking will bring you to the west side of the lake. The trail goes uphill again here. As you gain elevation, you will have better views of Lake Dispute. 4 switchbacks and 0.6 miles will bring you to another junction. Go left onto Mt Crichton Loop Track. About 25 yards on this trail will bring you to a stunning overlook. You will be able to see Lake Dispute, Lake Wakatipu, and many mountains in the distance. This makes the end of the trail. Once you have taken ample time to rest up and enjoy the views, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the start of the trail. The Lake Dispute Track is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. This trail is shared with bikers. The Lake Dispute Track is a terrific option for hikers visiting the Queenstown area.
