Description
Dutchman Trail #104 to Black Top Mesa is a 15-mile out-and-back route on the west side of the Superstition Wilderness located east of Phoenix, Arizona. Starting from the First Water Trailhead, the trail heads east on Dutchman Trail #104 and makes a scenic loop around Boulder Canyon, including an ascent to Black Top Mesa. It features well-maintained singletrack trails, opportunities for solitude, expansive mountain views, and stunning desert landscapes. With a total elevation gain of 2,227', it is a moderately rated route that is suitable for hiking, running, and backpacking.DESCRIPTION / DIRECTIONSStart at the First Water Trailhead and follow the Dutchman Trail #104 southeast into the Superstition Wilderness. Ascend gently to Parker Pass and enter Boulder Canyon. Dutchman Trail #104 skirts around Palomino Mountain, then heads east to Upper Black Top Mesa Pass. The trail turns again at Terrapin Canyon, heading north to Marsh Valley. After reaching Marsh Valley, leave the Dutchman Trail #104 briefly and turn left onto Bull Pass Trail #129. A short out-and-back leads to Black Top Mesa, which offers incredible backcountry camping and stunning views. Retrace your steps back to the start by continuing west on Bull Pass Trail #129 and then following Dutchman Trail #104.FIRST WATER TRAILHEAD FEATURESLarge parking area and bathrooms.REGULATIONSMechanized and/or motorized travel is prohibited.No more than 15 people are allowed to be in a group. No more than 15 heads of livestock are allowed in a group.Horses are not recommended on this trail. This route takes place within the Superstition Wilderness, which is subject to certain Wilderness restrictions. Respecting these regulations is crucial for the future of this beautiful ecosystem and the plants and animals that live there. WATERMany water sources in this area are seasonal and unreliable. Make sure you do adequate research, contact a nearby park ranger in advance, and prepare to carry sufficient water with you.
