Description
This route is a 19.4-mile out-and-back through the Superstition Wilderness. It starts from the First Water Trailhead, located off of State Route 88 northeast of Apache Junction, Arizona. The route begins with the Dutchman Trail #104 and heads south and then east to reach Charlebois Spring. The landscape consists of craggy peaks, wide valleys, and native desert plants. The route traverses up and down, intersects a number of other trails, and gains 1,970 feet in elevation. It offers views of notable landmarks such as Weaver's Needle and Black Top Mesa as it makes its way to Charlebois Spring, a surprisingly picturesque verdant oasis surrounded by large stands of Cottonwood and Sycamore trees, tall grasses, and cattails. This route can be completed as a day hike or an overnight trip and is open to trail running, hiking, and backpacking. DIRECTIONSStart by taking the Dutchman Trail#104 to Little Boulder Canyon. The trail heads south around Black Top Mesa and then north to Marsh Valley. Turn right, and follow the trail east through LaBarge Canyon to reach Charlebois Canyon and Charlebois Spring. When you are ready to head back, retrace your steps and follow the Dutchman Trail #104 all the way back to First Water. WATERAlthough Charlebois Spring is a fairly reliable, year-round, water source, it is still recommended that visitors contact the visitor center or ranger station to find out current conditions, and prepare to carry sufficient water along the trek. FIRST WATER TRAILHEADFirst Water Trailhead features a large parking area and bathrooms.REGULATIONSThis route takes place almost entirely within the Superstition Wilderness where certain Wilderness regulations apply.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONUSFS - Superstition Wilderness
