Description
Peralta Canyon Trail #102 is a 12.8-mile out-and-back on one of the most visited trails in the Superstition Wilderness. It begins at the Peralta Trailhead on Peralta Road, east of Phoenix, and continues through Peralta Canyon to the east side of Boulder Canyon, where it links up with the Dutchman Trail #104. It's a challenging, yet scenic trail that's popular for a reason. The landscape consists of craggy peaks, native desert plants, and expansive views, which include Weaver's Needle, a 1,000-foot rock column with a distinctive peak that can be seen for miles in all directions. The first half of Peralta Trail #102 is the most popular and crowded. From the trailhead to Fremont Saddle, you should expect to encounter tons of people of all ages, and these numbers are likely to increase as the day progresses. In addition, this section has a steep climb that gains nearly 1,500 feet to reach the saddle, so it could be slow going. Most people turn around once they reach Fremont Saddle, however, there is much more to this trail that continues north. Although the northern half is still popular, there's a lot fewer people there. On the west side of Peralta Canyon, the trail descends gradually into Boulder Canyon. Several other trails are accessible from there, providing endless opportunities to create additional routes and/or loops. REGULATIONSMechanized and/or motorized travel is prohibited. No more than 15 people are allowed to be in a group. No more than 15 heads of livestock are allowed in a group.Horses are not recommended on this trail. Peralta Canyon Trail #102 is located within the Superstition Wilderness, which is subject to certain Wilderness restrictions. Respecting these regulations is crucial for the future of this beautiful ecosystem and the plants and animals that live there. WATERMany water sources in this area are seasonal and unreliable. Make sure you do adequate research, contact a nearby park ranger in advance, and prepare to carry sufficient water with you. PERALTA TRAILHEAD INFORMATIONLarge parking area with bathrooms.
