Starting from the main parking area on the south side of the park off Frankfurt Drive, this hike starts on the wide, well-used Eureka Mines Trail. The first mile of the hike is a steady, but very gradual uphill, heading through the forest. At the first junction, take a left onto the L&N Trail which will climb to the BMRR South Trail.Turn right on the BMRR South Trail which is a wide, straight path. Continue on this until you come to the Adventure Area (well worth a visit on it's own if you or your kids enjoy zip lines or ropes courses). Here turn north onto the #13 Mine Trail. This short trail takes you north to the historic site of the Ishkooda #13 Mine, an old iron ore mining site, one of several remaining mine sites on Red Mountain. While the entrance of the mine is closed with a large concrete slab, you can find various historic artifacts in the area. Once you are done exploring the mine site, head back down the way you came, this time connecting to the Eureka Mines Trail which heads steadily downhill to return you to the trailhead.
Red Mountain was once the site of extensive iron ore mining.
