Description
Just off of Oregon Highway 35, this modest cascade, also referred to as "Sahale Falls"* is well worth a stop. If you are already at the Elk Meadows trailhead, it's less than a half-mile walk through a fir and hemlock forest filled with black huckleberry bushes that ripen in late summer.** If you have the time, continue on the trail for an additional mile, climbing 700 feet up to Umbrella Falls, and then loop back around the north side of Hood River Meadows for a total of 3.2 miles. * Interestingly, reference to the falls can be found with both spellings, but the falls shouldn't be confused with the larger falls on the McKenzie River. ** The forest surrounding Hood River Meadows is so thick with huckleberries that it's protected by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and Mount Hood National Forest; picking is reserved for traditional native purposes only.
