Waterline starts just above Lithia Park, near a large parking area on Glenview St., and is a gentle climb at first, followed by a very steep, intense grade, after which it is flat for almost a half mile. In this section, the trail parallels Ashland Creek.
Near the trailhead, it is multi-use with hikers, runners, bikers and equestrians (rarely). The few equestrians must turn on Bandersnatch, where pedestrians have the option of continuing on to the Waterline Trail and eventually to the Snark Trail.
Virtually all mountain bike traffic is downhill on Waterline coming from BTI and Jabberwocky, however, the occasional cross-country cyclist may hike up Waterline and Snark. Be aware that mountain bikers have a hard time stopping quickly on the one steep hill so those on foot should be alert. Pedestrians and runners should stay to the right on the trail going up and and on the left going down.
There is poison oak along parts of this trail. Deer, bears, and cougars have been sighted in the area. Dogs off leash here are a particularly bad idea.
