There and Back
The Catamount Mountain Trail begins from a small roadside pull-off along NY-56 south of Parishville. The route climbs gradually through boreal forest before steepening near the summit. Though short, the final push involves brief but rugged sections that may require hands for balance. Along the way, hikers may encounter seasonal streams, but reliable water is scarce—plan to bring enough for the round-trip.
From the open summit ledges of Catamount Mountain, expansive views stretch across the St. Lawrence Foothills with glimpses of the Adirondack High Peaks rising to the east. This is a quiet and remote trail, with low traffic and good chances for wildlife sightings, including moose, beavers, and loons. Confident navigation is recommended, especially if extending the route toward Carry Falls Reservoir via faint or unmaintained paths. Snowshoes or traction may be needed in winter, and food should be stored properly due to bear activity. The summit’s rugged outlook and seclusion make this a rewarding half-day hike in a less-traveled part of the park.
