Description
From the west side, the paved but rock covered G-O Road ends at a widening for parking and turning around at the Siskiyou Wilderness boundary. The trail exists as the unpaved continuation of the road through the wilderness. The trail initially climbs past a wilderness sign, the only sign along the entirety of the length to indicate that it is there. Being old road, the climb is generally more gentle than typical trails might have. The surface is also a bit harder and feet may become sore more quickly hiking on it. As it climbs, it offers more views, first to the south, then grabbing some northerly sights. A long dip drops to a seasonal stream which is the only possible water for most of the length. Climbing again, it grabs those views again. Near the high point, an unmarked trail starts north past Chimney Rock. This trail is very indistinct since the last fire and would take a lot of care to follow to its end at the similarly indistinct Buck Camp Ridge Trail. There may be small streams as the trail drops again. The trail has its one steep spot as it switchbacks down in the final drop to Blue Creek and Elk Valley. Maintenance of the trail has been lacking and there are several trees down per mile, but very few have been cut for easier passing.
