Loop
This moderate hiking route begins near South Gate Road in Sterling Forest State Park. Head south west on the Red Back Trail, then turn right onto McKeags Meadow Trail which leads to the Hutchinson Trail. Take the Hutchinson Trail north as it climbs gradually through hardwood forest. At the next junction, stay right onto the Palisades 18 Trail, which traverses quiet terrain with hemlock groves and moss-covered boulder fields. Continue east and then south as the trail arcs gently downhill through shaded woods. Finish the loop by connecting to the Munsee-Eagle Trail, which leads west back to the starting point.
Watch for small stream crossings along the Red Back and Hutchinson segments, especially in spring. Wildlife sightings are common—deer, wild turkeys, and hawks frequent the area. While the trails are well-marked, junctions can be confusing, so GPS or a printed map is recommended. This is one of the more peaceful day hikes in Sterling Forest for those seeking solitude and forest scenery.
