Loop
The Dater Mountain Loop Trail begins at a small trailhead off Stony Brook Road near Sloatsburg, New York, and winds through Rockland County parklands in the Ramapo Mountains. From the trailhead, follow the marked path as it climbs gradually through mixed hardwood forest. After a moderate ascent, keep right to the route that follows a ridgeline offering several scenic overlooks with broad views across the Ramapo range, especially striking during fall foliage.
The trail then descends gradually through forested terrain and returns via a different segment to complete the loop near the starting point. There are no reliable water sources along the route, and some sections may be muddy or slick after recent rain. Dogs are permitted on leash, and the route is open year-round, though snow and ice may linger in winter. Plan ahead for navigation and enjoy the quiet forest walking and elevated views that make this a rewarding day hike in the Hudson Highlands.
