Description
To access this hike, head along Sound Drive to the Norumbega Mountain Pull-off Parking Area, just down the road from the Parkman Mountain Parking Area (this parking area is a good backup option if the pull-off parking is full). From the north side of the parking area, head west on the Goat Trail as it climbs rather abruptly up the east face of Norumbega Mountain. There are a number of switchbacks along this slope that make the grade slightly more manageable but this stretch will undoubtedly get your heart rate up. Don't worry, though, as this is the only significant climb on the loop and the views from the top are well worth the effort! As the trees begin to thin out and the trail heads across large granite outcroppings, continue on to the Norumbega Mountain Trail. This is a great spot for a break after your climb. From here, the route levels out and begins to descend southward down the ridge of Norumbega Mountain. Look east for views of the Upper Hadlock Pond and west for views of Somes Sound, !Acadia Mountain, Valley Peak, and Flying Mountain.Continue past the Golf Course Trail, descending further to the southwest shores of Lower Hadlock Pond. At this junction, head back up on the Hadlock Ponds Trail as it hugs the western shore of the pond. After around a half mile, stay to the left, passing the Lower Hadlock Trail and then turn left on the Norumbega Connector. Follow this connector for just under a mile to return to the start of Goat Trail.
