From its junction with the Weehawken Trail #206, a series of steep switchbacks brings the Alpine Mine Trail to a lofty vantage over Yankee Boy Basin and the surrounding 13,000 foot peaks. Leveling for a brief respite on a narrow ledge just 6/10ths of a mile from the split, the trail then shuttles you towards an exposed ledge perched high above a steep and eroding drainage.
Wrapping the mountainside towards the head of the drainage, the trail meets with what little remains of the Alpine Mine. With another quick burst along the opposite side of the drainage, the trail crescendos as it gains the overlook's ridge just shy of 11,000 feet, some 3,000 feet above Ouray.
