Description
Sunset Point is a wonderful viewpoint located within Capitol Reef National Park. It is accessed by a .5 mile hike (one way). The overlook at the end of the trail provides spectacular views of the park and is indeed a great place to catch a sunset. To get to the trailhead you'll need to drive just shy of a mile down a gravel road. Although certainly passable with any vehicle, there are sections of the road that are quite washboardy and bumpy.Once you've parked, find the sign that says "Sunset Point Trail 1/3 Mile" and begin your hike. The trail gains a small amount of elevation as it works its way up to Sunset Point. It is kind of unclear where the official Sunset Point and end of the trail is, so be sure to explore the entire overlook area. One side of the overlook provides views down into the Sulphur Creek Canyon. On the other side you'll find an outcropping of large, flat rocks that are fun to scramble up.Views stretch out across Capitol Reef National Park. The huge sandstone cliffs contrast beautifully against the impressive Henry Mountains in the background. When you are finished enjoying the views, return the way you came back to the trailhead.
