Description
Frying Pan Trail to Cassidy Arch is a 10.7-mile out-and-back route in Capitol Reef National Park. The trailhead is located off of Scenic Drive in the Fruita Historic District. The route begins at Cohab Canyon and continues south on the Frying Pan Trail, which connects Cohab Canyon and Cassidy Arch Trails. This is a moderate to strenuous route with some sections of steep trail and an overall elevation gain of 3,172 feet. The route follows trails that are open to runners, hikers, and backpackers. This scenic route features pinyon and juniper trees, colorful and unique geology, panoramic ridgetop views, and Cassidy Arch. At 400 feet above the Scenic Drive and Grand Wash Trail, this stunning rock formation is a popular destination in the park as well as a highlight of the route.DIRECTIONSFrom Scenic Drive, take the Cohab Canyon Trail for about 1 mile to the Frying Pan Trail junction. Follow the Frying Pan Trail south for about 3.5 miles to reach Cassidy Arch. You can reach the top of the arch by taking a short out-and-back trail. Continue to the Cassidy Arch Trailhead, where restrooms are available (if needed). The turnaround point for this route is the Cassidy Arch Trailhead. CAMPING AND PERMITSA backcountry permit is required for camping outside of designated campgrounds in Capitol Reef National Park. Permits are free and can be obtained from the visitor center.FEES AND PASSESCapitol Reef National Park charges a fee to enter the park and travel along the Scenic Drive past the Fruita Campground. CONSIDERATIONSMake sure to bring a map and download and/or print the Fruita Map and Guide.Check current weather predictions but prepare for all types of environments as the weather can change quickly in this area. There can be extreme heat, monsoon rains, and flash floods in the summer. You should bring enough water to last the duration of your trip. Please do not cut switchbacks or throw rocks.
