The Thunder Swamp Trail begins from a trailhead off PA 402 in southern Pike County and forms a rugged backcountry-style route through the Delaware State Forest. From the main trailhead, hikers can follow the orange-blazed loop through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, past numerous wetlands, creeks, and swampy lowlands. The trail surface is often wet, uneven, and rocky, requiring sturdy footwear and close attention to footing. Several Y-intersections connect to spur trails, including a northeast extension of the main route leading toward the Stillwater Natural Area. This section is also blazed in orange and can alternatively be accessed from additional parking along Bushkill Falls Road near Lake Minisink.
Although elevation change is minor, the route is physically demanding due to terrain. Creek crossings, especially on Red Rock Run or Spruce Run, can become difficult after rainfall or in high water. Parts of the route may be overgrown or blocked by fallen trees, and some junctions may be faint, though blazes generally mark the way. Camping is allowed along the route, and the area sees occasional use for overnight backpacking. Permits are required for multi-night stays or large groups. In summer, mosquitoes and ticks are common, and hikers should be prepared for remote conditions with few crowds. Highlights include quiet ponds, forested ridges, a slide waterfall on Red Rock Run, and a deep sense of solitude on this long-distance route in northeastern Pennsylvania.
