Description
Part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Van Campens Glen is a moderate hike along a creek that ends at a scenic waterfall. The hike has a total elevation gain of 195 feet, but it is mostly a flat hike. This hike is great for those looking for a short hike to a beautiful place. Pack a lunch and lounge at the foot of the waterfall, but no swimming is allowed here. Because of the ease of access and moderate difficulty, Van Campens Glen can get crowded and is best suited for a weekday instead of the weekend. The hike from the trailhead to the waterfall is a little over a mile. It has two major ascents, but most of the hike is on even terrain. The trail follows a creek and has a lot of places that allow you to easily access it. Most of the trail is covered in shade, so even on a hot sunny day you will have some relief thanks to the forest's canopy. The trail ends at Van Campens Falls, but there is another significant waterfall about a quarter-mile in, as well as many smaller ones lining the entire trail. Summer is a very popular time for this trail, when families visit the national park, but the real beauty of this trail exists in the fall when the leaves change and the forest takes on a whole new identity. The Delaware Water Gap has over 67,000 acres of woodlands to explore and 40 miles of the scenic Delaware River. With over 100 miles of hiking trails, you will never get bored. Van Campens Glen offers one of the many waterfall views you can see in the area. Want to learn more about the history of this vast region? Continue driving down Old Mine Road to find an old village still standing from the 18th century.
