Hawk Rock and Mead Farm Loop

The Hawk Rock and Mead Farm route begins at the end of Whangtown Road in the Horse Pound Brook Unit of Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park. From the trailhead, follow the lightly marked path as it climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest. At the first major junction, stay right to continue toward the ridgeline. After a steep, rocky stretch, reach Hawk Rock—a prominent outcrop with broad, west-facing views over the Hudson Highlands. Beyond Hawk Rock, the trail descends through a quiet saddle before reaching the historic Mead Farm area. Stone foundations and overgrown clearings mark the site of former pastures and homesteads. From here, continue along the forested loop, keeping left at the next Y-intersection to complete the return toward Whangtown Road. Seasonal streams flow near Horse Pound Brook, but water is unreliable—carry plenty, especially in summer. The trail is moderately rugged with some poorly marked sections, so map and compass navigation is recommended. This route rewards hikers with solitude, history, and a panoramic overlook in the heart of Fahnestock.
