Mount Egbert, located in the Depot Hill Multiple Use Area, is by no means an impressive summit. The wooded summit lies on a mild stretch of the Appalachian Trail and, if not for a USGS survey marker, would be easily passed by with much notice. But just past the unassuming summit is a viewpoint offering impressive panoramic views from the Hudson Highlands all the way to the Catskills. Heading south from the parking area toward this unique view is an equally unique trail shelter. The Morgan Stewart Trail Shelter can hold six campers, but the surrounding area provides ample space for tents, boosting the capacity of the site. A well pump, large fire pit, and free library add to the appeal of this site, especially for thru-hikers. A small painting of the lean-to, done by a local hiker, adds to the cozy atmosphere of the shelter, making it a worthy stop for thru-hikers and day hikers alike. The Appalachian Trail stretches through Depot Hill Multiple Use Area; adventures can continue along the trail from here.
