There and Back
Granite Creek Canyon is an amazing place to visit. There is great camping and fishing available. This area is worth visiting for the drive alone. The views are amazing. The road takes you into the heart of the Gros Ventre Mountains. It's a great place to watch wildlife. These mountains are home to the largest elk herd in the United States. There are also lots of deer and moose. The dirt road off the highway is well graded and can be done in any car. It is ten miles from the highway to the falls and hot springs. I LOVE this drive. After ten miles you will see the falls in plain sight on your right. There is a small parking area with very short trails to the base and brink of the falls. This waterfall is only about 20 feet tall but it is very wide and in the spring has a lot of power. It was a lot of fun to see. Right after the falls you will see the sign pointing you to the hot springs. It's impossible to get lost since the road ends at the springs. These are natural hot springs that flow into a swimming pool built by the CCC. They naturally get a lot hotter in the winter. It's a fairly large pool in a gorgeous setting and was a great way to relax. There are a few spots to sit right where the springs enter the pool where the water was particularly nice. There is a 6 dollar fee per person to swim so make sure you bring cash or a check. There are restrooms, and changing rooms on site. The road dead ends at the pool so you have to return the way you came. We came out in the evening so we were able to see lots of wildlife which was a great way to end our short adventure.
