Calico Basin

The Calico Basin Trail takes off from the Red Spring Trailhead. This is a popular trailhead and is located away from the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop Drive, meaning that you won't have to pay any entry fees or make a reservation. The trail itself is quite easy and takes hikers beside some popular climbing spots and beautiful red colored rock, but it is best combined with a steep off-trail hike up Guardian Angel Canyon to a spectacular viewpoint.As the trail heads away from the trailhead you'll immediately pass several popular climbing and bouldering areas including the impressive Cannibal Crag. The trail then crosses a short section of slickrock where a few markers will guide your way.You'll pass the junction of the Girl Scout Trail as you reach the base of beautiful Guardian Angel Canyon. This is where the Calico Basin Trail ends and the fun begins! An unmaintained user trail continues upward into the canyon. This "trail" is steep, rocky, and easy to lose in areas - but it will take you past some beautiful terrain and to the Top of the Hill Viewpoint. This viewpoint at the top of the canyon offers spectacular views, and those with scrambling skills can even attempt to climb up the canyon wall for an even better view.Return the way you came taking care on the steep, rocky descent. Once you reach the bottom of the canyon rejoin the Calico Basin Trail and return the way you came.
