This easygoing route begins at the trailhead off LaPlatte Circle and follows a wide, mostly flat path along the LaPlatte River. Follow the trail east until it connects with the river loop, then begin the loop in either direction. The trail crosses several footbridges and boardwalks as it loops through a mix of riparian and marsh habitat. The south end of the loop passes by Shelburne Falls—a quick detour leads to a rocky cascade and scenic river views before returning to the main path.
The trail passes through sections of both the Shelburne Town Lands and the adjacent LaPlatte River Marsh Natural Area, offering excellent birding and chances to spot beaver activity, turtles, and other wetland wildlife. Be prepared for muddy conditions after rain and take caution on slick boardwalks. The route is open year-round, but spring through fall offers the most accessible terrain.
