Superstition Ridgeline

Superstition Ridgeline is an 20-mile out-and-back route across the Superstition Mountains. It starts and ends at the Siphon Draw Trailhead located in the Lost Dutchman State Park, Northeast of Apache Junction, Arizona. The route ascends up Siphon Draw, traverses up and down across a scenic ridgeline, and continues southeast on the Superstition Ridgeline Trail featuring 360-degree views across the Superstition Wilderness. The route offers access to The Flatiron, a rugged mesa rock formation and a popular hiking destination, Superstition Mountain (5,057'), and the Three Sisters Viewpoint. It passes the Hieroglyphic Trail and connects to the Carney Trail on the eastern end. The Superstition Ridgeline Trail technically stops at the northern end of the Carney Trail, but this route turns around a few miles earlier to avoid an unnecessary descent (setting up a shuttle and doing a point-to-point finish at the Carney Trailhead would be another option).It is a relatively straightforward route, but it is not easy. It has little to no shade, no water, several steep sections, and an elevation gain of 8,630'. In addition to scenic vistas, panoramic views, and solitude, it traverses a remote and difficult-to-access area. There are a few exit points along the ridge, but they require steep descents that can be just as challenging as completing the whole route. This is a strenuous trek that can be completed in a day or overnight as a backpacking trip. It is best suited for hikers with experience, who know their limitations and are familiar with the area. This route takes place within the Superstition Wilderness, which is subject to certain Wilderness restrictions.
