There and Back
It's shorter way to start this hike is from the campround in Lost Dutchman State Park, but if you're not camping then you'll probably have to start from the Cholla or Discovery Trailhead, which makes the hike a bit longer. Start as early as you can for the best parking and temperatures. The first mile or so is on a wide trail with steady, rocky incline through open desert. Eventually you'll reach a bare-rock basin at the foot of the mountain and the entrance to a steep valley. This is Siphon Draw, and the spot where the fun starts! From here the hike becomes extremely steep for the rest of the way up Flatiron peak. Expect to use your hands in places for balance and propulsion up the rock.Near the top, you'll come to a section that requires upper body strength to pull yourself up or having someone push you up. This is the last real obstacle. Just after, the trail reappears on flatter ground and leads out to the summit of the Flatiron. Once there, take a break and enjoy the view. You've earned it!Keep in mind that going down can be tougher than going up. On the way down, it's often better to zigzag rather than scooting straight down the rock.
