South Matthieu Lake is a popular day hike, but it is most commonly accessed via the hike from Lava Camp Trailhead off McKenzie Highway. This variation begins from the more remote and harder to get to Scott Pass Trailhead and follows the Scott Pass Trail all the way to the lake. While perhaps not the preferred route, you'll certainly see fewer people and also not have to worry about about reserving a day use permit in advance. From the trailhead it's a gradual ascent up through a burn area. While it's sad to see the devastation of the fire, you will have a view of North Sister through the burnt trees for most of the hike. You'll reenter some living forest just before topping out on Scott Pass. An optional side trail to the left leads up to a viewpoint. Turn right to tie in with the Pacific Crest Trail and arrive at South Matthieu Lake. This small but beautiful lake is a great place to take a break, enjoy the view, and perhaps go for a swim. There is also camping here but you must have a permit and can only camp at one of the designated sites. After enjoying the lake return the way you came to Scott Pass Trailhead.
