Description
The Thunder Trails network is located just south of Norwood and offers 19 miles of hiking and biking opportunities. There are 4 different loops, and all can be connected to form longer hikes. Forest Road 609 provides access to the area. Do note that dirt bikes are allowed on these trails. The Portis Loop is the second loop in the trail system, and also the longest at 5.4 miles in length. There is limited parking where the loop crosses the forest road.If hiking in a clockwise direction you'll begin on some cruisy trail through tall ponderosa pines, and some scenic large open meadow areas. There is a wooden footbridge across a drainage at one point, and also some small cattle guard type bridges that provide access through fences without needing to open a gate.At the far end of the loop you'll come to the junction with the Naturita Rim Loop. Turn right, cross the forest road then stay right at the next junction to remain on the Portis Loop. The trail then turns a bit rockier as it travels near the edge of Naturita Canyon. You'll have views out across the canyon at points, including of Lone Cone (12,585') and the La Sal Mountains of Utah in the distance. At the junction with the Thunder Trail turn right to return to the forest road where you first began.
