Description
Pothole Point Trail is a short 0.6-mile hike within the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. The trail leaves the parking lot traveling toward an outcropping of slick rock and can be hiked in either direction. Once on the slick rock, follow the cairns for directions. The trail is named for the holes in the sandstone rock created over many years by the slightly acidic rain water that pools and slowly erodes the stone. Over time, the potholes can become big enough to collect enough dust to allow plants to take root. The trail is short enough to be enjoyed year round, but it is quite exposed and will be hot during the summer months. The trail is suitable to most ability levels, but is not ADA accessible. Kids will enjoy the easy climb up the slick rock. For photographers, the elevated slick rock provides a nearly 360-degree view of the surrounding area and provides opportunities for photography throughout the day when there are clouds. Sunset is the best time to visit, when the light skims the plethora of unusual rock formations and shows of the texture of the surrounding sandstone. As with the rest of the park, there is no water at the trailhead. There are also no restroom facilities at this trailhead.
