Description
The Confluence Overlook Trail is a bit over 10 miles in length (round trip) and leads to a fantastic viewpoint overlooking the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers some 1,000 feet below. Hikers should be prepared for a tough hike that requires some easy slick rock scrambling. There is very little shade and no water along the trail, so be cautious especially if hiking in the heat of summer.Begin from the Big Spring Trailhead at the end of the paved park road. Note that you'll need to pay the entrance fee or have a national park pass to get here. The trail immediately descends to the bottom of Big Spring Canyon, then climbs right back out. Watch for cairns that mark the path. The hiking is a little easier as you continue, but there are areas of scrambling mixed with sections of nice trail. You'll have great views, including of the namesake Needles in the distance. You'll cross a 4x4 road and continue straight until coming to a signed junction. From the signed junction you'll follow the road for 1.1 miles to the overlook, passing a vault toilet and picnic table along the way.The overlook provides a stunning view of the Green and Colorado Rivers. Stay on the trail and be cautious of the drop-off along the canyon rim. After enjoying the views, return the way you came back to Big Spring Trailhead.
