There and Back
The Whitney Spur Rail Trail begins near the MBTA’s Cohasset Station on the Greenbush Line and heads south toward Wompatuck State Park along a relatively flat and accessible corridor. From the northern trailhead, the route follows the old rail spur that once served the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex. After crossing under Chief Justice Cushing Hwy. (Route 3A), it winds through the Great Swamp wetland—part of the Hingham Bay watershed—before entering a forested corridor.
At the edge of Wompatuck State Park, the trail transitions to the paved Wompatuck Bikeway. From here, hikers can continue farther into the park or connect with nearby networks such as Whitney and Thayer Woods. The main route remains wide and smooth, ideal for novice hikers, bikers, and leashed dogs. While there are no water sources directly along the trail, Wompatuck offers springs and reservoirs deeper in. This short, easy route provides a convenient greenway connection and access point to longer hikes in the South Shore’s protected woodlands.
