Loop
Begin at the Whitney & Thayer Woods south entrance on Route 3A in Cohasset, across from Stop & Shop. From the trailhead, follow Howes Lane a short distance before turning right onto Boulder Lane, where the forest quickly closes in. At the junction with Whitney Road, turn right and continue north on the wide, wooded path. Take a sharp left onto Ayer’s Lane, which gradually transitions into the Milliken Memorial Path. This stretch is especially scenic in spring, with azaleas, rhododendrons, and a tranquil “wild garden” feel. Follow the path as it curves back to Whitney Road, then turn right onto Bancroft Trail to return to the trailhead.
Expect mostly easy terrain, with some muddy or wet areas after rain. Dogs are allowed, with off-leash access in designated zones—check signage. The route passes near small brooks and vernal pools, but no potable water is available. Seasonal bow hunting is permitted in parts of the reservation from the first Monday in October through December, except Sundays. This route offers a peaceful walk through classic South Shore woodland, highlighted by glacial boulders and remnants of historic farmland.
