Ripsey Wash Loop

Ripsey Wash Loop is a 19.4-mile journey that begins and ends at a parking area off Centurian Lane near the Florence Kelvin Bridge and the Gila River, located northwest of the town of Kearny, Arizona. This adventure utilizes singletrack trails and double-track dirt road paths, including a section of the Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT) and a jeep road through Ripsey Wash, presenting hikers with a unique blend of natural and rugged beauty.Your hike starts by heading south on the Arizona Trail, following signs for the AZT as you begin to ascend towards "Big Hill." As the name suggests, this involves a steep section to the top of the climb. Reaching the top of Big Hill rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape.The descent from Big Hill involves winding switchbacks leading down to the serene Ripsey Wash. At this point, you'll turn right/north onto a jeep road that meanders down the wash. This section of the route offers a change of pace and scenery, with the opportunity to explore the dry wash's unique environment.Continue for several miles until you reach Florence Kelvin Road. The final stretch of the loop involves turning right/east onto Florence Kelvin Road and retracing your steps along the AZT back to the parking area.FLORA AND FAUNACommon plants along this route include saguaros, cholla cacti, mesquite, and palo verde trees, and beautifully colorful wildflowers in the spring. This area is also home to a wide range of wildlife, from the elusive desert tortoise and various lizard species to larger mammals like jackrabbits, coyotes, and the occasional bighorn sheep. Bird enthusiasts may spot a variety of raptors soaring above or hear the calls of desert songbirds.WATERThere may be seasonal water in Ripsey Spring and some of the tanks near Ripsey Wash may have water, but it is best to check for up-to-date information before heading out.
