Picketpost Loop

The Picketpost Loop is a 15-mile journey that circles Picketpost Mountain and traverses through Tonto National Forest, starting and ending at the Picketpost Trailhead, located just outside Superior, Arizona. This loop integrates the Lost Trail 221, Telegraph Canyon Trail, Telegraph Canyon Road, and a segment of the iconic Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT). It offers hikers an immersive experience in the diverse Sonoran Desert landscape, featuring steep mountainous terrains, lush canyon floors, and wide panoramic views. ROUTE DESCRIPTIONYour adventure begins at the Picketpost Trailhead, where ample parking is available. From here, head onto Lost Trail 221, a moderately challenging path with dense vegetation and rocky outcrops.As you continue, the trail connects to the Telegraph Canyon Trail, where the environment transforms. Here, you're likely to encounter a variety of plant life, including saguaros, cholla cacti, and mesquite trees.The trail will then guide you onto Telegraph Canyon Road. This section allows for a brief respite on more even terrain, offering a chance to enjoy the expansive views of the surrounding valleys and the towering Picketpost Mountain.Completing the loop, you'll join the Arizona Trail, renowned for its scenic beauty and biodiversity. This portion of the trail brings you back towards the trailhead, concluding your journey.TERRAINExpect a mix of rugged single-track trails, dirt roads, and steep inclines. The varying elevation offers both challenges and rewards, with the highest points providing breathtaking views of the Superstition Wilderness and beyond.PERMITS AND CAMPINGNo specific permits are required for day hiking on this loop.
