The Narrow-Gauge Rail Trail begins at Loomis Street near Bedford Depot Park, where a restored diesel railcar and freight engine house mark the start of this historic corridor. Heading north, the route follows the original path of the Billerica & Bedford Railroad—America’s first two-foot gauge common-carrier railway—through a mix of wooded conservation land and residential edges. After a short paved section, the trail transitions to stone-dust and packed gravel, with occasional sandy or muddy patches, especially after rain or in winter.
The route crosses several roads, including Great Road and Springs Road—use caution at each crossing. Scenic highlights include forested stretches and a side path toward Fawn Lake, a local spot known for its natural views. The main trail remains mostly flat and easy to follow, though connecting conservation paths may add variety. The route ends at the Bedford–Billerica town line; the corridor beyond is private and closed to the public. Open year-round, this is a relaxed option for walking, biking, or dog walking on leash.
