The Dike Trail begins at the observation tower and parking area on the Concord Unit of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, reached via Monsen Road in Concord, Massachusetts. This easy, mostly flat route follows a man-made dike between the Upper and Lower Pools of the refuge’s wetland impoundments. The trail loops back to the starting point while offering panoramic views across the marsh and open water. Early on, hikers pass the elevated observation tower and platform—ideal for scanning the horizon for birds and wetland wildlife.
From the tower, follow the wide dike path straight ahead. The trail is well-defined and level, crossing boardwalk sections and skirting the edge of the marsh. Stay right to circle the Upper Pool, connect with Edge Trail, and follow a short segment of the Reformatory Branch Rail Trail to return to the trailhead. Red-winged blackbirds, great blue herons, marsh wrens, and muskrats are frequently seen along the way, making this a popular spot for bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The entire route stays close to the water, and boardwalks may be muddy or slippery during rainy seasons. Dogs, bikes, and horses are not allowed, and all visitors must remain on designated trails to protect sensitive habitat. A small entrance fee is collected at a self-pay station near the parking area. This short, accessible route delivers wide-open wetland scenery and a quiet refuge for year-round wildlife viewing.
