This mellow hiking route begins at the Sterling Nature Center parking area on Jenzvold Road and follows the Buttonbush Marsh Trail into the heart of a quiet wetland preserve. Hike clockwise to access the best views early in the route, moving along flat terrain through cattail marshes and mixed hardwood forest. At a signed junction, turn right toward Eagle’s View Trail to reach a short spur with a raised overlook platform above Lake Ontario. The platform offers a sweeping view of the shoreline and is a prime spot for spotting bald eagles, herons, and other wetland birds.
After returning from the overlook, continue along the main route as it curves gently through forest and occasional open wetland. The trail is wide and well-maintained, with several benches and interpretive signs along the way. Watch for ticks in warmer months, and expect wet or icy footing in spring or winter. With its flat grade, scenic variety, and easy navigation, this is one of the most accessible day hikes near Oswego for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.
