Description
The Silvercrest Trail in Palomar Mountain State Park is a scenic 1.2-mile hike. There is a parking lot, picnic area, and restroom at the trailhead. The trail itself is a well-maintained narrow dirt path, winding through meadows and forests. You may very likely see several species of birds, such as western bluebirds, woodpeckers, and red-shouldered hawks. The area is also home to predators such as bobcats, foxes, and coyotes. Animals that are easier to spot include southern mule deer and grey squirrels. Wildflowers such as western dogwoods, azaleas, and lilies blossom here during the spring. White fir, incense cedar, and big-cone Douglas-fir trees provide plenty of shade throughout the hike. About halfway down the trail rests the grave of William H. Pearson, who was one of the many pioneers who settled on the mountain. The area was also home to many Native American tribes including the Cupeno, Ipai, and Serrano. Today, descendants of these tribes work to honor and restore their ancient languages and culture.
