The Vineyard Trail #131 is a 12.1-mile out-and-back within Tonto National Forest. The trail runs between Theodore Roosevelt Lake and the Mills Ridge Trailhead. The trail consists of a well-maintained singletrack that passes through a variety of Lower Sonoran Desert vegetation while offering panoramic views of Roosevelt Lake.Starting at the southern end, the trailhead is located off of Arizona State Route 188. It begins with a steep climb that offers scenic views of Theodore Roosevelt Bridge to the southeast. It winds its way through rocky switchbacks, scenic ridgelines, and grassy hillsides lined with desert succulents, shrubs, wildflowers, and cacti. It is generally considered a moderately rated trail that includes some steep sections and gains 2,408 feet in elevation overall. Vineyard Trail #131 is a shared route with the Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT), which extends to the north and south and is open to runners, hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers. WATERIt can get hot and dry on this trail. It is recommended that visitors bring and carry enough water for the duration of the trek. TRAILHEAD ACCESSIt begins near Roosevelt Lake at the southern entrance of Vineyard Trail #131, which is much easier to access than Mills Ridge Trailhead.Southern end: parking is available off of Arizona State Route 88 near the bridge adjacent to Roosevelt Dam.Northern end: Mills Ridge Trailhead may require a 4WD vehicle to access. CONSIDERATIONSTemperatures in the lower elevations can reach well above 100 degrees fahrenheit in the summer.Mountain bikes might find some sections challenge with rugged terrain and steep slopes.
